Does Heartburn Mean You Are Having a Girl?

Posted 17 Oct 2026

Heartburn is a classic old wives’ tale linked to baby girls, but it is only a bit of fun. Enjoy the myth while you wait for a proper scan.

Many mums-to-be notice heartburn creeping in and wonder if it hints at a girl. The old tale says a fiery chest means a daughter is on the way, while a calm tummy points to a boy. It is one of those stories passed round antenatal groups for generations.

In truth, heartburn in pregnancy usually comes from hormones relaxing the valve at the top of the stomach and the growing bump pressing upwards. It has nothing reliable to do with whether you are carrying a boy or a girl.

Still, these bits of folklore can make the waiting weeks feel lighter. Chatting about heartburn, cravings or the shape of your bump is a gentle way to daydream about the baby without taking any of it as fact.

If the burning bothers you, simple comforts like smaller meals and sleeping slightly propped up often help. For any real clue about your baby’s sex, an ultrasound remains the proper route when the time is right.

So smile at the old wives’ tale, share a laugh with friends, and treat heartburn as just another temporary visitor on the pregnancy journey rather than a secret gender reveal.
