Can You Tell Baby’s Sex at 12 Weeks?
Posted 18 Oct 2026
At 12 weeks most parents are still in the guessing stage. Early clues can be fun to chat about, but nothing is certain yet.

Twelve weeks is a lovely milestone. The first trimester is nearly behind you, the bump may be just starting to show, and the dating scan is often around this time. Naturally many mums wonder whether anyone can already tell if it’s a boy or a girl.
On a standard NHS dating scan the sonographer is mainly checking dates, heartbeat and that everything looks well. The baby is still tiny, so clear views of the genital area are rarely the focus and most professionals will not offer a sex prediction this early.

Some families enjoy looking at the ‘nub theory’ photos shared online or trying old wives’ tales for a bit of light-hearted fun. These are purely entertainment and never a substitute for later scans or proper tests.
Non-invasive prenatal testing can sometimes give an early indication of sex from a blood sample, yet even those results are best treated as interesting information rather than a final answer. Plenty of parents prefer to wait for the mid-pregnancy anomaly scan when the view is clearer.
However you choose to spend these weeks, the real joy is simply knowing your little one is growing. Keep the guesses playful, enjoy the flutterings, and let the big reveal come in its own good time.
